La gestión medioambiental en las empresas familiares: evidencia empírica sobre su propensión hacia la sostenibilidad

La creciente preocupación por la sostenibilidad pone de manifiesto la importancia de la gestión medioambiental de las empresas. Por ello, la adopción de modelos de economía circular (circularidad) y el desarrollo de ecoinnovaciones representan fuentes de ventajas competitivas que contribuyen al cumplimiento de los objetivos medioambientales a corto y a largo plazo. El presente artículo profundiza en los impulsores de la circularidad y la ecoinnovación mediante el estudio de la relación entre cada una de estas prácticas y el tipo de propiedad de las empresas, ya sea familiar o no familiar. Basándonos en la teoría de la riqueza socioemocional y en su explicación por la cual las empresas familiares tienen un mayor interés en aspectos no financieros, proponemos que las empresas familiares son más circulares y ecoinnovadoras que las empresas no familiares. Para testar nuestras hipótesis, utilizamos datos del Eurobarómetro Flash 486 sobre pymes, empresas emergentes, empresas en expansión y emprendimiento. Los resultados nos llevan a no rechazar las hipótesis propuestas. Con ello, observamos que el tipo de propiedad de las empresas es un factor organizacional relevante cuando se toman medidas de carácter medioambiental. Específicamente, concluimos que son las empresas familiares las que tienen una mayor propensión hacia su desarrollo.
