Immigration Control and Corruption of Public Officials and the Entry of «Undesirable Immigrants» in Chile and Peru (1900-1930)

This article analyzes restrictive immigration policies in Chile and Peru (1900-1930) and the participation of public officials in the irregular entry of Chinese immigrants. It demonstrates, primarily through the analysis of consular archives, that despite both countries having different regulatory frameworks regarding immigration, both Peru and Chile experienced a flow of “undesirable Immigrants’ through fraudulent documentation and corruption of officials in Asian consulates, as well as in the main disembarkation ports.
