Abstract

Since 1973 there have been changes at all levels in the Madre de Dios region, as a consequence of the intense working of gold that has been initialized. This gold boom means an awakening of a new merchand-extractive economy, which has been present in the region since the rubber era, but with some intermittences. These days the gold mining is the principal economic activity in the region, but its growth has affected other activities, mainly agriculture, which has a negative effect over the regional development. This article studies especially the economic consequences of the changes caused by the gold boom.
