GUIDELINES
1.Eligibility
In its inaugural edition, the award will recognize the best article published among the 46 manuscripts featured across the 7 issues of the journal corresponding to the years 2023, 2024, and 2025. The following types of contributions are excluded from the pool of eligible works:
● Introductions to special issues
● Book reviews
● Translations
2. Award
The author or authors of the winning article will receive:
● A cash prize of five hundred US dollars (USD 500).
● A certificate signed by the editor-in-chief of Apuntes, Revista de Ciencias Sociales.
3. Selection Process
The selection of the winning article will take place in two successive stages: the identification of finalists through a quantitative index, and the qualitative evaluation by the Editorial Committee.
3.1. First Stage: Selection of Finalist Articles
The first stage aims to identify the six finalist articles based on a normalized reach index, constructed from the components described below:
a) Readability Index
The readability index is calculated by dividing the combined number of views of the PDF and HTML files of each article by the number of abstract consultations on the Apuntes website. The data used comes from the OJS platform statistics, with a time filter ranging from January 1, 2023 to January 31, 2026.
b) Average Citation Count
The simple average is calculated between the number of citations for each article recorded in Scopus and those recorded in the SciELO Citation Index within the Web of Science platform. The former correspond to citations in publications indexed in Scopus; the latter, to citations in open-access journals from Latin America and other regions integrated into Web of Science through the aforementioned SciELO citation index.
The reach index resulting from the sum of the readability index and the average citation count is weighted according to the publication year of each article. This weighting criterion seeks to balance the temporal advantage that older articles have in citation accumulation, giving greater visibility to more recent publications.
The weighting criterion is as follows: the index will be multiplied by 1 if the publication year is the first year of the period, by 2 if it is the second year, and by 3 if it is the third year.
Once the weighted reach index has been calculated for all 46 articles, it is normalized for each one on a scale of 0 to 100 using the following formula:
The articles are ranked in descending order according to the normalized index, and the six with the highest value form the shortlist of finalists.
3.2. Second Stage: Editorial Committee Evaluation
The six finalist articles will be evaluated by the eight members of the Apuntes Editorial Committee, who will assess them independently according to the six criteria detailed in the following table. The rating scale runs from 1 (lowest score) to 5 (highest score). The Committee will have a period of twelve weeks to complete their evaluations.
5. Determination of the Winner
Once the evaluation period has concluded, the winning article will be determined by calculating the average of the scores awarded by the Editorial Committee members to each finalist article. The article with the highest average will be declared the winner.
6. Announcement of the Winner
The article selected as the winner will be announced by email to the authors on June 8th, and the Apuntes mailing list on June 15th.
